Miguel Castillo was born in Roldanillo, Colombia in 1944. He studied Literature and Philosophy at the Universidad del Valle (1963-1965). He then embarked in a career in arts, taking classes in drawing, painting and sculpture at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cali, Colombia (1970-1976). His early work acknowledged the influences of Edgar Negret, a modernist Colombian sculptor. In 1988 he emigrated to the United States and took classes in painting and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York (1989-1995). His chosen mediums have been stone, wood, metal and plexiglass.
Mr. Castillo's approach to sculpture is based in construction rather than modelling and his late works have become architectural. In addition, color, geometry and repeated forms have found their place in his work. Miguel Castillo has exhibited regularly in group shows since 1970 and has had a one-man exhibition at the Flywheel Gallery in Piermont, NY in 2000. He lives in Bridgeport, Connecticut and works in New York. |
